The Music Ministry of St. Michael and All Angels’ encompasses a broad range of music in the Episcopal Church today. Directed by Laura Rosier (All Saints’ Parish and Schola Choirs, Bene Elohim, Remiel’s Ringers, and Requiem Choirs) and Pamela Hair (St. Nicholas, St. Gabriel’s Junior and Senior RSCM Choirs), six of our choirs rehearse weekly and are always working to sing, ring, and play to the glory of God in worship.

Here is our latest all-choir video, created around our Kick-Off Sunday in the Fall of 2017, and our Fall All-Choir Retreat:

St. Michael’s owns enough copies for congregational use, and regularly sings from: The Hymnal 1982; Wonder, Love, and Praise; and Lift Every Voice and Sing, as well as many well-known contemporary hymns. Music is used from the historical Anglican music tradition and infusions of cultures and current composers of Christian music and contemporary Anglican musicians. Care is taken for musical and textual quality with each style used.

Our choristers regularly attend RSCM Summer Courses (Charlotte, Raleigh, National Cathedral, Washington) and the Sewanee Church Music Conference as well as various Handbell workshops throughout the year. Most choirs begin each Fall season with a day-long workshop led by a visiting director. Our St. Gabriel’s RSCM Choirs retreat each fall to either Camp Bob (Kanuga) or Camp Gravatt. Our RSCM Choirs participate in a Treble Festival with other RSCM Choirs each spring. Our choirs work together for festival services like St. Michael and All Angels’ Day, days when our Bishop visits for Confirmation and Reception, Christmas Eve, Easter Day, Epiphany, Maundy Thursday, Advent Lessons and Carols, and other special occasions. The All Saints’ Parish and Schola Choirs, and St. Gabriel’s RSCM Choirs offer Evensong once in the Fall and once in the Spring. The St. Gabriel’s RSCM Choirs are working with a few other churches for a visit to Piccolo Spoleto this year.

St. Michael’s is blessed to have several instrumentalists (violin, classical guitar, piano) who offer music for Sunday worship services on occasion. We have a cantor team of four appointed singers of two adults and two senior teen-aged choristers.

Come join us! We invite you to be a part of our music life at SMAA!
